Konjunktiv II: Würde + Infinitive

The würde + infinitive construction is the most common and versatile way to form the Konjunktiv II in modern spoken German. It works like English "would + verb" and can be used with almost any verb.

When to Use Würde + Infinitive

Rule: Use It for Most Verbs

For the vast majority of German verbs, würde + infinitive is the standard Konjunktiv II form in modern spoken German:

• Ich würde das machen. — I would do that.
• Sie würde gern nach Paris reisen. — She would like to travel to Paris.
• Wir würden lieber zu Hause bleiben. — We would prefer to stay at home.
• Was würdest du an meiner Stelle tun? — What would you do in my place?
• Er würde sofort anfangen. — He would start immediately.

Exception: Do NOT Use Würde with These Verbs

For sein, haben, modal verbs, and a few common strong verbs, use the one-word Konjunktiv II forms instead:

Ich würde können	Ich könnte
Ich würde müssen	Ich müsste
Ich würde wissen	Ich wüsste

Using würde with these verbs is not strictly wrong but sounds unnatural and is avoided by native speakers.

Würde in Conditional Sentences (Wenn-Sätze)

The most common use of würde + infinitive is in conditional sentences — sentences with "wenn" (if):

Structure

Wenn + subject + ... + Konjunktiv II (at end), würde + subject + ... + infinitive

Or the reverse order:

Subject + würde + ... + infinitive, wenn + subject + ... + Konjunktiv II (at end)

• Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich ein Buch schreiben.

• If I had more time, I would write a book.

• Wenn es nicht regnen würde, würden wir spazieren gehen.

• If it were not raining, we would go for a walk.

• Ich würde nach Japan fliegen, wenn ich genug Geld hätte.

• I would fly to Japan if I had enough money.

• Was würdest du machen, wenn du im Lotto gewinnen würdest?

• What would you do if you won the lottery?

• Wenn sie hier wäre, würde sie uns helfen.

• If she were here, she would help us.

Würde for Polite Requests

Würde + infinitive is widely used for polite requests:

• Würden Sie bitte das Fenster öffnen? — Would you please open the window?
• Würdest du mir bitte helfen? — Would you please help me?
• Würden Sie das bitte wiederholen? — Would you please repeat that?
• Würden Sie mir bitte den Weg zeigen? — Would you please show me the way?

This is slightly more formal than using könnten (could).
