This lesson brings together everything you have learned about adjectives and applies it to one of the most practical tasks in any language: describing people. You will learn how to describe someone's physical appearance, personality, and character using natural Italian phrases and constructions.
To describe someone's general appearance, Italian uses the verbs essere (to be) and avere (to have):
| Verb | Used For | Example |
|---|---|---|
| essere | Height, build, age, general qualities | Maria è alta e magra. (Maria is tall and thin.) |
| avere | Hair, eyes, facial features | Maria ha i capelli lunghi. (Maria has long hair.) |
Marco è alto e robusto. Ha i capelli corti e neri e gli occhi marroni.
(Marco is tall and sturdy. He has short black hair and brown eyes.)
Lucia è bassa e snella. Ha i capelli biondi e ricci e gli occhi azzurri.
(Lucia is short and slim. She has blonde curly hair and blue eyes.)
