Superlatives express the highest or lowest degree of a quality: "the tallest," "the most interesting," "very beautiful," "extremely cold." Italian has two types of superlatives: the relative superlative (the most/least among a group) and the absolute superlative (very/extremely, without comparison to a group).
The relative superlative identifies the most or least within a specific group. It is formed with the definite article + più/meno + adjective:

| article + più + adjective | Roma è la città più grande d'Italia. (Rome is the biggest city in Italy.) |
| article + meno + adjective | Questo è il ristorante meno caro della zona. (This is the least expensive restaurant in the area.) |
The article agrees with the noun:
