Italian periodo ipotetico (hypothetical period) uses se (if) to express conditions and their consequences. There are three main types, but in this lesson we focus on Type 1 (real/possible conditions) and Type 2 (unreal/hypothetical conditions in the present).
| Type | Condition | Se Clause | Result Clause |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type 1 (Reale) | Real / Possible | se + presente | presente / futuro / imperativo |
| Type 2 (Possibile) | Unlikely / Hypothetical | se + congiuntivo imperfetto | condizionale presente |
| Type 3 (Irreale) | Impossible (past) | se + congiuntivo trapassato | condizionale passato |
Note: Type 3 requires the compound conditional (condizionale passato), which uses the past participle. We introduce it here for reference but focus on Types 1 and 2.
Type 1 conditions describe situations that are likely, possible, or generally true.

| Se piove, resto a casa. | If it rains, I stay at home. |

| Se studio, imparo. | If I study, I learn. |
| Se non dormi abbastanza, sei stanco. | If you do not sleep enough, you are tired. |

| Se piove, resterò a casa. | If it rains, I will stay at home. |
| Se studi, supererai l'esame. | If you study, you will pass the exam. |
| Se ho tempo, ti chiamerò. | If I have time, I will call you. |
| Se fa bel tempo, andremo al mare. | If the weather is nice, we will go to the beach. |

| Se hai bisogno di aiuto, chiamami. | If you need help, call me. |
| Se non capisci, chiedi al professore. | If you do not understand, ask the professor. |
| Se sei stanco, vai a dormire. | If you are tired, go to sleep. |
In Italian, you NEVER put the future tense directly after se in Type 1 conditions.
| Correct | Incorrect |
|---|---|
| Se piove, resterò a casa. | |
| Se hai tempo, andiamo. | |
| Se finisci presto, chiamami. |
Tip: This is the same rule as in many Romance languages. After se (if), use the present tense, and put the future in the result clause.
Type 2 conditions describe situations that are unlikely, imaginary, or contrary to current reality.
| Italian | English |
|---|---|
| Se avessi più soldi, comprerei una casa. | If I had more money, I would buy a house. |
| Se fossi ricco, viaggerei per il mondo. | If I were rich, I would travel the world. |
| Se parlassi italiano, potrei vivere a Roma. | If I spoke Italian, I could live in Rome. |
| Se avessimo più tempo, andremmo in vacanza. | If we had more time, we would go on holiday. |
| Se potessi, verrei con te. | If I could, I would come with you. |
Since Type 2 requires the imperfect subjunctive, here are the forms of key verbs:
