Adverbs (avverbi) modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They answer questions like "how?", "when?", "where?", and "how much?" Italian adverbs can be formed from adjectives or exist as independent words.

Forming Adverbs with -mente

The most productive way to form adverbs in Italian is by adding -mente to the feminine singular form of an adjective (equivalent to English "-ly"):

Special Rule: Adjectives Ending in -le or -re

If the feminine adjective ends in -le or -re, drop the final -e before adding -mente:

Exceptions

A few adverbs have irregular forms:

Key: "Buono" (good) and "bene" (well) are the most common pair to confuse. "Buono" is an adjective: un buon libro (a good book). "Bene" is an adverb: parlo bene (I speak well).

Key distinction: "Molto" as an adverb never changes form: Lei è molto bella. Loro sono molto belli. But "molto" as an adjective agrees: Ho molti amici (many friends).
