Subjunctive with Doubt and Uncertainty

If opinions and emotions require the subjunctive, it makes even more sense that doubt, uncertainty, and denial do too. When the speaker is unsure whether something is true, or actively denies it, the subordinate clause must be in the congiuntivo.

Examples

Dubito che Marco arrivi in tempo. — I doubt Marco will arrive on time. Non sono sicuro che loro sappiano la strada. — I'm not sure they know the way. Non sappiamo se possa venire. — We don't know if she can come. Dubito che faccia bel tempo domani. — I doubt the weather will be nice tomorrow.
