Subjunctive with Doubt and Uncertainty

If opinions and emotions require the subjunctive, it makes even more sense that doubt, uncertainty, and denial do too. When the speaker is unsure whether something is true, or actively denies it, the subordinate clause must be in the congiuntivo.

"Sembra Che" and "Pare Che" (It Seems That)

When something only seems or appears to be the case — without certainty — the subjunctive is used:

sembrare che	to seem that	Sembra che piova.
parere che	to appear that	Pare che siano in ritardo.
avere l'impressione che	to have the impression that	Ho l'impressione che lui non capisca.

Examples

Sembra che tutto vada bene. — It seems everything is going well. Pare che il treno sia in ritardo. — It appears the train is late. Mi sembra che tu abbia ragione. — It seems to me you're right. Pare che vogliano trasferirsi. — It appears they want to move.

Negative Expressions That Trigger the Subjunctive

When you negate a statement of certainty, the result is doubt — and doubt requires the subjunctive:

È certo che viene. (It's certain he's coming.)	Non è certo che venga. (It's not certain he's coming.)
