Subjunctive with Impersonal Expressions

Italian has a rich set of impersonal expressions — sentences that begin with "it is..." (è...) without a specific subject. When these expressions introduce a value judgment, necessity, possibility, or opinion, the subordinate clause requires the subjunctive.

What Is an Impersonal Expression?

An impersonal expression has no specific personal subject. In Italian, these take the form:

È + adjective/noun + che + subjunctive

The "it" in English ("it is important that...") has no real referent — it's just a grammatical placeholder. Italian often drops even that:

È importante che tu studi. — It's important that you study.
