Subjunctive with Impersonal Expressions

Italian has a rich set of impersonal expressions — sentences that begin with "it is..." (è...) without a specific subject. When these expressions introduce a value judgment, necessity, possibility, or opinion, the subordinate clause requires the subjunctive.

What Is an Impersonal Expression?

An impersonal expression has no specific personal subject. In Italian, these take the form:

È + adjective/noun + che + subjunctive

The "it" in English ("it is important that...") has no real referent — it's just a grammatical placeholder. Italian often drops even that:

È importante che tu studi. — It's important that you study.

Examples

È necessario che tu studi di più. — It's necessary that you study more. Bisogna che noi andiamo subito. — We need to go immediately. Occorre che voi sappiate la verità. — It's necessary that you know the truth.

Bisogna vs È necessario

Bisogna is very common in spoken Italian. It works the same way as è necessario but is more informal:

Bisogna che tu faccia i compiti. — You need to do the homework.

Note: Bisogna can also be used with an infinitive (without che) for general statements:

Bisogna studiare. — One must study. (no specific subject)
