Subjunctive with Wishes and Opinions

Now that you can form the congiuntivo presente, it's time to learn when to use it. The most common triggers are expressions of wishes, desires, opinions, and beliefs in the main clause.

Wishes and Desires

When the subject of the main clause wants, desires, or expects something from a different subject, the subordinate clause takes the subjunctive.

Examples with Volere

Voglio che tu parli italiano. — I want you to speak Italian. Vuole che noi andiamo al cinema. — He wants us to go to the cinema. Non voglio che loro sappiano la verità. — I don't want them to know the truth.

Examples with Desiderare and Preferire

Desidero che mio figlio studi medicina. — I wish my son would study medicine. Preferisco che tu prenda il treno. — I prefer you take the train. Desideriamo che tutto vada bene. — We wish everything goes well.

Remember the Same-Subject Rule

If the subject is the same in both clauses, you do not use che + subjunctive. Instead, use the infinitive (often with di):

Opinions and Beliefs

When the main clause expresses a personal opinion or belief rather than an established fact, the subordinate clause requires the subjunctive.
