Everyone loves a good story. Being able to narrate events, tell anecdotes, and recount experiences is one of the most engaging skills you can develop in Spanish. In this lesson, we will review the key tenses used in storytelling, learn narrative connectors, and practise with complete example stories.
Spanish storytelling relies primarily on two past tenses working together: the pretérito indefinido (preterite) and the pretérito imperfecto (imperfect). Understanding when to use each is the key to telling good stories.
Used for completed actions — events that happened at a specific time and moved the story forward:
| Subject | Hablar | Comer | Vivir |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yo | hablé | comí | viví |
| Tú | hablaste | comiste | viviste |
| Él/Ella | habló | comió | vivió |
| Nosotros | hablamos | comimos | vivimos |
| Ellos/Ellas | hablaron | comieron | vivieron |
Function in stories: Advances the plot. Answers "What happened?"
Used for background descriptions, ongoing states, habitual past actions, and setting the scene:
| Subject | Hablar | Comer | Vivir |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yo | hablaba | comía | vivía |
| Tú | hablabas | comías | vivías |
| Él/Ella | hablaba | comía | vivía |
| Nosotros | hablábamos | comíamos | vivíamos |
| Ellos/Ellas | hablaban | comían | vivían |
Function in stories: Sets the scene. Answers "What was happening?" or "What was it like?"
| Imperfect (Background) | Preterite (Action) |
|---|---|
| Era una noche oscura... | ...cuando oímos un ruido extraño. |
| Yo caminaba por la calle... | ...y de repente vi a mi profesor del colegio. |
| Hacía mucho frío... | ...así que decidimos entrar en un café. |
| Ella llevaba un vestido rojo... | ...y me saludó con una sonrisa. |
Tip: Think of the imperfect as the movie set (lighting, weather, what things looked like) and the preterite as the action scenes (what happened, what changed).
A well-told story in any language follows a structure. Here is a framework for narrating in Spanish:

Introduce the events and build tension:
The key event or turning point:
What happened as a result:
