Telling the Time

Telling the time in Spanish requires a few specific structures that differ from English. Once you learn the core patterns, you will be able to ask and tell the time confidently in any situation -- from making appointments to catching a train.

The Basic Structure

"Es la" vs "Son las"

• Use es la for 1 o'clock (singular): Es la una.
• Use son las for all other hours (plural): Son las dos. Son las tres. Son las diez.

12:00	Son las doce.	It is twelve o'clock.

Adding Minutes

First Half of the Hour (Minutes 1--30): Use "y"

Add minutes after the hour using y (and).

3:05	Son las tres y cinco.	It is three oh five.
3:10	Son las tres y diez.	It is three ten.
3:15	Son las tres y cuarto.	It is quarter past three.
3:20	Son las tres y veinte.	It is three twenty.
3:25	Son las tres y veinticinco.	It is three twenty-five.
3:30	Son las tres y media.	It is half past three.

Second Half of the Hour (Minutes 31--59): Use "menos"

In traditional Spanish (especially in Spain), subtract minutes from the next hour using menos (minus / less).

3:35	Son las cuatro menos veinticinco.	It is twenty-five to four.
3:40	Son las cuatro menos veinte.	It is twenty to four.
3:45	Son las cuatro menos cuarto.	It is quarter to four.
3:50	Son las cuatro menos diez.	It is ten to four.
3:55	Son las cuatro menos cinco.	It is five to four.

Note: In Latin America and increasingly in Spain, people often just add the minutes directly: Son las tres y cuarenta y cinco instead of Son las cuatro menos cuarto. Both are correct.
