The condicional simple (simple conditional) is the Spanish equivalent of English "would". It is used for hypothetical situations, polite requests, wishes, and more. Like the future tense, it is formed by adding endings to the complete infinitive — and the endings are the same for -AR, -ER, and -IR verbs.
Take the full infinitive and add the conditional endings:
| Ending | Used with |
|---|---|
| -ía | yo |
| -ías | tú |
| -ía | él / ella / usted |
| -íamos | nosotros/as |
| -íais | vosotros/as |
| -ían | ellos / ellas / ustedes |
Key point: Notice that yo and él/ella/usted share the same ending: -ía. Context (or a subject pronoun) makes the meaning clear.
Tip: The conditional endings look like the imperfect tense endings of -er/-ir verbs (-ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían). If you know those, you already know the conditional endings!
