The -IR verb group is the third and final family of regular verbs in Spanish. While it is the smallest group, it contains many important everyday verbs. The great news is that -IR conjugation is almost identical to -ER conjugation, with only two forms being different.
For example, with the verb vivir (to live):
| Subject Pronoun | Ending | Example with vivir | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | -o | vivo | I live |
| tu | -es | vives | you live |
| el / ella / usted | -e | vive | he/she lives, you (formal) live |
| nosotros / nosotras | -imos | vivimos | we live |
| vosotros / vosotras | -is | vivis | you all live |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | -en | viven | they live, you all (formal) live |
Tip: The -IR endings are identical to -ER endings in four out of six forms. The only differences are nosotros (-imos instead of -emos) and vosotros (-is instead of -eis).
| Subject | -ER Ending | -IR Ending | Different? |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | -o | -o | No |
| tu | -es | -es | No |
| el/ella/usted | -e | -e | No |
| nosotros/as | -emos | -imos | Yes |
| vosotros/as | -eis | -is | Yes |
| ellos/ellas/ustedes | -en | -en | No |
This means that if you already know -ER conjugation, you only need to memorise two new endings for -IR verbs.
