Thai has a rich vowel system with 32 vowel forms, but the core concept is simple: there are 9 basic vowel sounds, each with a short and long version. Vowel length is crucial in Thai — it affects both meaning and tone.
In Thai, the difference between a short and long vowel can change a word's meaning entirely:
| Short Vowel | Meaning | Long Vowel | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| กัด (gàt) | To bite | กาด (gàat) | Market (dialect) |
| จิต (jìt) | Mind | จีด (jìit) | — |
| ปุ (bpù) | Grandmother | ปู (bpuu) | Crab / grandfather |
Vowel length also determines whether a syllable is live or dead, which directly affects the tone:
| # | Short Form | Pronunciation | Long Form | Pronunciation | Sound |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | -ะ (à) | Short "a" | -า (aa) | Long "a" | Like "a" in "father" |
| 2 | -ิ (ì) | Short "i" | -ี (ii) | Long "i" | Like "ee" in "see" |
| 3 | -ึ (ʉ̀) | Short "ʉ" | -ือ (ʉʉ) | Long "ʉ" | No English equivalent — spread lips, say "oo" |
| 4 | -ุ (ù) | Short "u" | -ู (uu) | Long "u" | Like "oo" in "moon" |
| 5 | เ-ะ (è) | Short "e" | เ- (ee) | Long "e" | Like "e" in "hey" |
| 6 | แ-ะ (ɛ̀) | Short "ɛ" | แ- (ɛɛ) | Long "ɛ" | Like "a" in "bat" |
| 7 | โ-ะ (ò) | Short "o" | โ- (oo) | Long "o" | Like "o" in "go" |
| 8 | เ-าะ (ɔ̀) | Short "ɔ" | -อ (ɔɔ) | Long "ɔ" | Like "aw" in "law" |
| 9 | เ-อะ (ə̀) | Short "ə" | เ-อ (əə) | Long "ə" | Like "u" in "burn" |
Note: The dash (-) represents the position of the consonant. Thai vowels wrap around the consonant in different positions.
Thai vowels can appear in four positions relative to their consonant. This is one of the most distinctive features of Thai script:
| Vowel | Example | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| เ- | เก (gee) | Long "e" |
| แ- | แก (gɛɛ) | Long "ɛ" |
| โ- | โก (goo) | Long "o" |
| ไ- | ไก (gai) | Diphthong "ai" |
| ใ- | ใจ (jai) | Diphthong "ai" |
Crucial rule: Even though these vowels are written to the left of the consonant, you pronounce the consonant first, then the vowel. So เก is read as "g + ee" = "gee", not "ee + g".
| Vowel | Example | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| -ิ | กิ (gì) | Short "i" |
| -ี | กี (gii) | Long "i" |
| -ึ | กึ (gʉ̀) | Short "ʉ" |
| -ื | กือ (gʉʉ) | Long "ʉ" (with อ) |
