Test Day: What to Expect
Knowing exactly what will happen on test day helps reduce anxiety and allows you to focus entirely on performing well. This lesson walks you through every stage of the experience, from arriving at the test centre to seeing your Section A score.
Before You Leave Home
The Night Before
- Confirm your test details — Log in to your Pearson VUE account and check the date, time, and address of your test centre
- Prepare your identification — Place your accepted ID somewhere you will not forget it
- Plan your journey — Know exactly how you will get to the test centre and how long it will take. Add extra time for delays.
- Get a good night's sleep — Resist the temptation to do last-minute practice late into the evening. Rest is more valuable than an extra hour of practice.
On the Morning
- Eat a proper meal — The test is 2 hours 15 minutes with no break for food. You need sustained energy.
- Stay hydrated — Drink water, but not so much that you will need the toilet during the test
- Arrive early — Aim to arrive at the test centre at least 15–30 minutes before your scheduled start time
Accepted Identification
You must bring valid identification to the test centre. Without it, you will not be allowed to sit the test, and your fee will not be refunded.
Accepted Forms of ID
| ID Type | Requirements |
|---|
| Passport | Valid (not expired); must contain your photograph and signature |
| Driving licence | Valid photo card driving licence |
| National identity card | Government-issued, with photograph (accepted in some countries) |
ID Requirements
- The name on your ID must exactly match the name you registered with on lnat.ac.uk
- The ID must be a valid, original document — photocopies, digital copies, and expired documents are not accepted
- If your name has changed since registration (e.g., due to marriage), contact LNAT and Pearson VUE in advance to resolve the discrepancy
Critical Warning: If you arrive without valid ID, you will be turned away. There are no exceptions. Double-check your ID the night before.
Arriving at the Test Centre
Check-In Process
When you arrive at the Pearson VUE test centre, you will go through a standard check-in procedure:
- Report to reception — Tell the staff you are there for the LNAT
- Present your ID — They will verify your identity against the booking
- Photograph — A digital photograph will be taken (this is standard for Pearson VUE tests)
- Palm vein scan or signature — Some centres may require a biometric palm vein scan or digital signature for security
- Store your belongings — You will be given a locker to store all personal items, including your phone, bag, watch, wallet, and any notes or books
What You Cannot Bring into the Testing Room
You cannot bring any of the following into the testing room:
- Mobile phone or any electronic device
- Watch (including analogue watches)
- Notes, books, or study materials
- Food or drink (water is sometimes permitted — check with the centre)
- Calculator (one is provided on screen if needed, though it is not necessary for the LNAT)
- Pens or pencils (scratch materials are provided)
What Is Provided
The test centre will provide:
- A computer workstation with the LNAT software loaded
- Scratch paper and a pen (or a whiteboard and marker) for making notes during the test — these must be returned after the test
- Noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs (usually available on request)
The Testing Room
The testing room is a quiet, supervised environment. Here is what to expect:
- Individual workstations — You will sit at your own computer, usually with dividers between stations for privacy
- Invigilator — A test centre administrator will be present (or monitoring via camera) throughout
- Other test-takers — You may be in the room with people taking different Pearson VUE tests (not necessarily the LNAT). They may start and finish at different times.
- Quiet environment — Talking is not permitted. If you need assistance, raise your hand to attract the invigilator's attention.
