Not all UK universities require the LNAT for Law admissions. Currently, nine UK universities and a small number of international institutions require the test. Each university uses LNAT scores differently, so understanding their individual approaches is essential for making strategic application choices.
As of the 2025/26 admissions cycle, the following universities require the LNAT:
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Programme | BA Jurisprudence (3 years) |
| UCAS deadline | 15 October |
| LNAT deadline | Must be sat by 15 October (in same year as UCAS deadline) |
| How Oxford uses LNAT | Section A score used for shortlisting; Section B essay read by admissions tutors |
| Interview | Yes — all shortlisted candidates are interviewed |
| Typical competitive Section A score | 27+ (ideally 29+) |
Oxford uses the LNAT as part of a holistic assessment. A strong Section A score helps you get shortlisted for interview, and your Section B essay is read carefully by tutors. However, the interview is the most important part of the Oxford admissions process — a high LNAT score alone is not sufficient.
Key Point: Oxford has the earliest LNAT deadline (15 October). If you are applying to Oxford, you must sit the LNAT earlier than applicants to other universities.

Cambridge uses both sections of the LNAT. Notably, Cambridge marks all Section B essays centrally — this is one of the most thorough uses of the essay component among LNAT universities.

LSE focuses heavily on Section A performance. The essay is generally only reviewed in specific circumstances, such as when an applicant holds qualifications that are less familiar to the admissions team.
