OCR J277 Paper 1 (Computer Systems) tests your knowledge of how computers work, from hardware to networks to ethics. This lesson provides specific strategies for tackling each type of question you will encounter.
| Topic | Typical marks in paper | Key revision areas |
|---|---|---|
| Systems Architecture (1.1) | 10-15 | CPU components, FDE cycle, Von Neumann, embedded systems |
| Memory and Storage (1.2) | 10-15 | RAM vs ROM, virtual memory, SSD vs HDD, optical, capacity |
| Networks (1.3) | 15-20 | LAN vs WAN, topologies, protocols, TCP/IP layers, Wi-Fi vs Ethernet |
| Network Security (1.4) | 8-12 | Malware types, social engineering, prevention methods |
| Systems Software (1.5) | 8-12 | OS functions, utility software |
| Ethics and Law (1.6) | 8-12 | Data Protection Act, Computer Misuse Act, e-waste, privacy |
The flowchart below shows how to pick the right answer strategy on Paper 1 based on the marks and command word:

A[Read question, note marks] --> B{Marks in brackets?}
B -->|1-2 marks| C[Short answer: 1 sentence per mark]
B -->|3-4 marks| D{Includes 'calculate'?}
B -->|6-8 marks| E[Extended response: plan + paragraphs]
D -->|Yes| F[Show formula, working, units]
D -->|No| G[Medium answer: 1 distinct point per mark]
C --> H[Move to next question]
F --> H
G --> H
E --> I[Plan 1-2 min, write 6-8 min, conclude]
I --> H
Short-answer questions test recall. They usually start with "State", "Name", "Give", or "Identify".
Strategy:
Example: "State the purpose of the MAR (Memory Address Register)." (1 mark)
Answer: The MAR holds the address of the memory location to be read from or written to.
OCR Exam Tip: For 1-mark questions, one clear sentence is sufficient. Do not write a paragraph — you cannot get more than 1 mark, so additional writing wastes time.
Medium questions require more detail. They often use "Describe" or "Explain".
Strategy:
Example: "Explain two advantages of using a solid-state drive over a hard disk drive." (4 marks)
Answer:
Calculation questions appear frequently in Paper 1, especially for file sizes and data units.
Strategy:
Example: "A digital image has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels with 24-bit colour depth. Calculate the file size in megabytes." (3 marks)
File size=width×height×colour depth=1920×1080×24=49,766,400 bits=6,220,800 bytes(÷8)=5.93 MB(÷1024÷1024)(1 mark for formula)(1 mark for calculation)(1 mark for correct answer with units)OCR Exam Tip: Even if you get the final answer wrong, you can still earn marks for writing the correct formula and showing your working. Never leave a calculation question blank.
Extended response questions are the most challenging. They require a well-structured, detailed answer that demonstrates deep understanding.
Strategy:
Common extended response topics in Paper 1:
Question: "Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using cloud storage for a small business." (6 marks)
Plan (in rough):
Answer:
Cloud storage offers several advantages for a small business. Files can be accessed from any device with an internet connection, which supports remote working and collaboration between employees in different locations. Cloud storage is also scalable, meaning the business can increase or decrease storage as needed without purchasing new hardware. Additionally, cloud providers typically offer automatic backups, reducing the risk of data loss.
However, there are disadvantages. Cloud storage requires a reliable internet connection; if the connection is lost, employees cannot access their files. There are also ongoing subscription costs, which may be more expensive over time than purchasing a one-off local storage solution. Furthermore, storing sensitive business data on third-party servers raises security and privacy concerns, as the business must trust the cloud provider to protect their data.
Overall, cloud storage is likely a good choice for a small business that has a reliable internet connection and values flexibility, but the business should ensure it chooses a reputable provider with strong security measures and should maintain local backups of critical data.
