Good spelling is a mark of careful, confident writing. In the SET Stage 1 comprehension, some MCQ options rely on your ability to spot correctly or incorrectly spelled words. In Stage 2, accurate spelling throughout your extended writing contributes to your overall mark. This lesson teaches you the key spelling rules and patterns that will help you get more answers right and write with greater accuracy.
This is one of the most famous spelling rules:
i before e: believe, achieve, chief, field, shield
Except after c (when the sound is "ee"): receive, ceiling, conceive, deceive, receipt
Some words break this rule. You need to learn these by heart:
| Word | Why It Breaks the Rule |
|---|---|
| weird | "ei" without a "c" before it |
| seize | "ei" without a "c" before it |
| their | "ei" without a "c" before it |
| protein | "ei" without a "c" before it |
| neither | "ei" without a "c" before it |
Tip: The rule works most of the time for the "ee" sound. For other sounds (like "ay" in "neighbour" or "weigh"), the rule does not apply.
When adding a suffix that starts with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u), drop the silent "e" at the end of the root word:
| Root Word | + Suffix | New Word |
|---|---|---|
| hope | + ing | hoping |
| make | + er | maker |
| excite | + able | excitable |
| nerve | + ous | nervous |
When adding a suffix that starts with a consonant, keep the "e":
| Root Word | + Suffix | New Word |
|---|---|---|
| hope | + ful | hopeful |
| excite | + ment | excitement |
| brave | + ly | bravely |
When a short word ends with a single vowel followed by a single consonant, double the consonant before adding a vowel suffix:
| Root Word | + Suffix | New Word |
|---|---|---|
| run | + ing | running |
| stop | + ed | stopped |
| big | + er | bigger |
| swim | + er | swimmer |
Why? Doubling the consonant keeps the vowel sound short. Without doubling, "hoping" (from hope) and "hopping" (from hop) would look the same.
For longer words, double the consonant only if the stress falls on the last syllable:
| Word | Stress | + ing |
|---|---|---|
| begin | beGIN | beginning |
| prefer | preFER | preferring |
| visit | VISit | visiting (no doubling) |
When a word ends in a consonant + y, change the "y" to "i" before adding a suffix (unless the suffix starts with "i"):
| Root Word | + Suffix | New Word |
|---|---|---|
| happy | + ness | happiness |
| beauty | + ful | beautiful |
| carry | + ed | carried |
| marry | + age | marriage |
